A BRIEF EXCURSION

Beach Walkers
Yesterday we drove down the mountain on winding roads to the seaside. The color of the Adriatic here shades from pale aqua to turquoise to deep lapis starting at the beach and going out about a mile. There were a few sailboats out, white wings gliding above calm water. Directly across the Adriatic is the Croatian city of Split, founded by the Romans 1700 years ago. Diocletian’s palace still stands, some of it cut up into apartments. It’s mind bending. You can rent an apartment in the palace where the Emperor Diocletian lived. Ferries run every few hours to Split from Ancona, which is about 30 klicks north of us.
